Drew woman charged in prison break, inmate still at large

Tenika Nicole Romero, 35, of Drew has been arrested in connection with Monday’s escape of two Parchman inmates who were discovered missing during the routine count of Unit 30 of the facility.
Romero was booked into the Sunflower County Jail Wednesday morning and charged with conspiracy to escape and her bond has been set at $50,000.

Second mayoral forum to address economic development, infrastructure

The second of two mayoral forums featuring the three Democratic party candidates for Indianola’s mayoral post will be held next Thursday, Sept. 28 at the Sunflower County Courthouse.
The Sunflower County Branch No. 5333 of the NAACP is hosting the forum.
The organization hosted a forum at Gentry High School in early September.

Agencies to host Indianola town hall to address opioid abuse

Multiple Mississippi agencies will host a town hall meeting in Indianola on Sept. 19 to address the growing impact of opioids in Mississippi communities.
According to a release from the Mississippi Department of Health this week, the meeting will take place at the Charles W. Capps Jr. Technology Center at 6:30 p.m. that day.

Future state borrowing for college improvements up in the air

One of the surprises of this year’s Mississippi legislative session was that lawmakers did not borrow any money for capital improvement projects around the state.
The state’s eight universities, who benefit greatly from this borrowing, already are marshalling the troops to make sure the Legislature does not do the same thing in 2018.
