Mississippi is working to wean able-bodied adults without children off food stamps by helping them get job training. And Doris Williams, a career navigator for Jobs for Mississippi Graduates, has seen it work firsthand.

The numbers are scary. Sunflower County’s population shrunk at the second-highest rate in Mississippi between 2010 and 2016, according to census estimates. The county lost 10.3 percent of its population — more than 3,000 people — in just six years.
